THE MEMORY OF THE RIVER EBRE

The everchanging river has so many stories to tell, specially those linked to the Spanish Civil War. Be ready for a cultural and history immersion!

Saberuda, our history expert, will immerse you in the tough times lived in this territory during and after the Spanish Civil war. A region hosting around 20.000 inhabitants (along with Terra Alta) that had to welcome all of a sudden more than 200.000 soldiers. And they also had to suffer the bloodiest battle of that cruel war, that happened at both sides of the river.

The Ebre battle, 115 days winning and losing territory, both the fascists and republican armies, 115 days of bombs, dead and misery. But not only that,... After 2 long years where the local farmers were not able to cultivate their lands due to the war, more than 40 years of dictatorship were to come. Repression, exile, deportation to nazi concentration camps,... The cruelty of the was wasn’t over.

So this trip wants to offer you the possibility to travel back to those times, to visit the mountains, fields and villages where the battle took place, to understand the impact of that war in the territory and the local people.

It also looks forward to meet the strong commitment of inhabitants to watch over the knowledge and the maintenance of the Catalan historical memory as collective heritage.

Be ready to connect with history in la Ribera d’Ebre.
